Indonesia’s geographic proximity and strategic importance to Australia make it vital to understand its history, language and culture. As the fourth most populous country in the world, Indonesia has increasingly played a key role in world affairs.

Bahasa Indonesia has become one of the most widely spoken languages in the world.¹ It is the official language of Indonesia. It is estimated that the total number of Bahasa Indonesia speakers are in excess of 250 million if numbers of second language speakers across South East Asia, the Netherlands, the USA and Australia are also included.
